How to Brew the Perfect Drip Bag Coffee
Great coffee. No machine. No grinder. No drama.
Drip bags are about as simple as specialty coffee gets. Each bag is individually packed with freshly ground coffee and designed to sit straight over your favourite mug. All you need is hot water and a couple of minutes.
Perfect for the office, camping, travelling, hotel rooms, or those mornings when firing up the espresso machine feels like a bit much.
What You’ll Need
-
1 Barth Lane Drip Bag
-
Your favourite mug
-
Around 200ml of hot water
-
A kettle
-
About 2 minutes
That’s it.
Step 1 — Get Your Water Hot
Boil your kettle and let it sit for a moment.
We recommend water around 92–96°C. If you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, don't overthink it — boil the kettle, wait 30 seconds or so, and you're good to go.
Step 2 — Open Your Drip Bag
Tear open the individual packet, then tear along the top of the drip bag.
Pull out the little paper arms and hook them securely over each side of your mug.
Give the bag a gentle shake to level out the coffee grounds.
Step 3 — Give It a Little Bloom
Pour just enough hot water over the coffee to completely wet the grounds.
Then wait around 20–30 seconds.
This is called the bloom. It allows the coffee to release trapped gases and helps you get a more even, tasty extraction.
Fancy coffee terminology. Very easy thing to do.
Step 4 — Slowly Pour to 200ml
Continue pouring your hot water slowly over the coffee in small stages.
Don't fill the bag right to the brim and walk away. Pour a little, let it drain, then pour again.
Aim for around 200ml total water and a total brew time of roughly 1½–2 minutes.
Step 5 — Bag Out. Coffee In.
Once the water has drained through, carefully lift the drip bag from your mug and dispose of it.
Give your coffee a little swirl.
Then drink it.
Easy.
Want to Tweak It?
There's no rule saying you can't play around with it.
Want it stronger? Use a little less water.
Want it lighter? Push it out to 220–230ml.
Want more sweetness and body? Slow your pour down a touch.
The beauty of a drip bag is that we've already taken care of the coffee, grind and dose. You just add water.
Why We Love Drip Bags
We're coffee roasters, so naturally we love the ritual of grinding beans and brewing coffee properly.
But sometimes you just want a bloody good coffee without taking half the kitchen with you.
That's where drip bags shine.
They're lightweight, individually packed and require absolutely no brewing equipment. Throw a few in your work drawer, suitcase, caravan, glovebox or camping kit and you've got genuinely good coffee pretty much anywhere you can find hot water.
